In Slack Season, the Valley's Evenings Run Later Than Its Buses

"Staffing is always a premium all year round," John Curnow, general manager of the Limelight Ketchum, told the Idaho Mountain Express in late September. He said a packed hotel in October needs the same staff as a packed hotel in February, and that this September was the hotel's best since it opened in 2017.

That doesn't sound like a valley shutting down. Between now and Bald Mountain's opening day on November 26, Blaine County doesn't go dark. Its hours shift. Daytime gets more public service than it had in summer. Late evening keeps its music, comedy and parties but loses its ride home. The clearest record of that shift takes effect tomorrow, Monday, October 5.

What Mountain Rides changes on October 5

Mountain Rides publishes new timetables for the Valley, Hailey, Blue and Airport Shuttle routes, effective October 5, 2026. The notice calls this a schedule change, not a shutdown. Mountain Rides still runs fixed routes linking Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley seven days a week, all year. The schedules change shape in three ways.

  • More midday buses northbound. On weekdays, the Valley Route's northbound departures from Clover & Gannett between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. go from nine to thirteen. New half-hour trips fill in at 9:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30, and the old 2:45 trip is dropped.
  • Fewer, earlier evening buses. After 6 p.m., the weekday northbound schedule had five departures: 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10:30. The new one has four: 6, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30. The last northbound bus now leaves an hour earlier.
  • Southbound loses the most at night. The last southbound Valley departure moves from midnight to 10:30 p.m. The preview also adds midday half-hour trips at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30.

Weekends end the same way. The last northbound weekend departure moves from 10:30 to 9:30 p.m., and the last southbound one from midnight to 10:30 p.m. Weekend mornings also lose the 11 a.m. trip in both directions. Northbound goes straight from the 10 a.m. bus to a noon departure.

The other routes change in smaller ways. The Hailey Route drops its 11:55 a.m. northbound and 12:25 p.m. southbound trips. Its last trips stay at 3 p.m. northbound and 3:30 p.m. southbound. On the Blue Route, buses leave Warm Springs every half hour from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., then hourly through 10:30 p.m. Return trips run until 11. Valley buses no longer stop at Friedman Memorial Airport. The free Airport Shuttle now connects the airport with Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley. Its last airport departures are listed as late as 10:20 p.m., and its last run from Sun Valley Lodge to the airport leaves as late as 9 p.m.

Daytime service grows and late-night service shrinks, and that matters once you compare it with the fall calendar.

The evening calendar didn't get the memo

Hailey's Liberty Theater has a full fall lineup, and many of its shows end after both ends of the Valley Route have sent out their last bus.

Date Event Venue Listed hours
Tue., Oct. 6 Comedy Underground Liberty Theater, Hailey 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Thu., Oct. 8 The Last Wild Buffalo with James "Taco" Tautkus Liberty Theater, Hailey 8 to 10:30 p.m.
Fri., Oct. 9 FREE HUB: A MTB Film Fest Liberty Theater, Hailey 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Thu., Oct. 22 ALTAN with Paddywagon Liberty Theater, Hailey 8 to 11 p.m.
Fri., Oct. 23 Wayward Screening: A SV Snowboard Fundraiser Liberty Theater, Hailey 6 to 9 p.m.
Sat., Oct. 31 Halloween Costume Party featuring DJ Ontic Liberty Theater, Hailey 8 to 11 p.m.
Tue., Nov. 3 The Sweet Lillies Liberty Theater, Hailey 8 to 11 p.m.
Fri., Nov. 6 That Johnny V Band Thing Liberty Theater, Hailey 8 to 11 p.m.
Wed., Nov. 18 A Special Tribute to Dr. Ralph Stanley, starring Nathan Stanley & The Constant Sorrow Liberty Theater, Hailey 7 to 9 p.m.

Five of these nine shows run to 10:30 p.m. or later. Under the new schedule, the last northbound Valley bus leaves Clover & Gannett at 9:30 p.m. The last southbound bus leaves its starting point at 10:30 p.m. A show that ends at 11 p.m. on ALTAN night, Halloween, or the two November band nights ends after both of those departures. Stop times in between vary, so it's worth checking the stop nearest the theater against the October 5 preview before counting on the bus home.

Ketchum's mid-October evenings are busy too. The Sun Valley Jazz & Music Festival runs October 15 through 18, with more than 100 performances across five venues. Ballet Sun Valley's Fall Festival takes The Argyros stage on October 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m., with tickets listed from $38 to $98. On the evening of October 22, the ballet's first night overlaps ALTAN's 8 p.m. start in Hailey.

Daytime is where the new buses go

The added midday trips line up with a daytime calendar that is easy to miss if you only follow the evening listings.

The Community Library runs Lunchtime Language: Spanish, free, on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Idaho Room through November 17. On October 8 it hosts A Conversation with Playwright Talene Monahon from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the lecture hall. Registration is requested, and the talk can also be watched online.

Sun Valley's outdoor rink hosts the fall session of Learn to Skate on Tuesdays from October 6 through November 10, with classes at 4 or 4:25 p.m. It's open to ages four through adult. The cost is $150 for six weeks and includes skate rental and a weekly public-skate pass. The resort doesn't post public-skating hours on its rink page and says to call the rink to confirm sessions and cancellations. The rink's summer ice-show season has ended. The 2026 Sun Valley on Ice schedule closed with Jason Brown on September 5.

The Lodge and Inn pools are heated year-round and open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The summer-only Olympic Pool is marked closed for the season.

Halloween follows the same split. The resort's Halloween Fall Festival in Sun Valley Village runs from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. It includes free trick-or-treating in the Village, free outdoor skating from noon to 3, and a free movie at the Opera House at 3 p.m. The Liberty Theater's costume party in Hailey starts four hours after the Village festival ends.

How businesses are adjusting

Local businesses describe slack in the same terms, as a change in when they're open and who is working. Mountain Express reporting from late September described signs on Wood River Valley storefronts warning of shifting hours and smaller staffs as students head back to school.

NourishMe owner Julie Johnson said her Ketchum business typically cuts hours around the "deepest part of slack," which is usually November, and called the students' return to school "perfect in a way" because staffing can ebb without layoffs.

Despo's owner Amy Harris said she doesn't change her posted hours for the slow season. On nights when no customers come in, she sometimes sends staff home and closes early. For anyone heading out late on a weeknight, a posted closing time is a guide, not a promise. Lyndsay Lyle said Bigwood Golf and Birdie's, the course's food-and-beer shack, close for winter. Many of the course staff work for Sun Valley Co. in the winter.

The dates that close out slack season

The second half of the season leads up to a fixed set of dates.

  1. Saturday, November 7. The Pray for Snow Party returns to River Run Lodge & Plaza from 4 to 8 p.m. with DJ Luke Ross and DJ SID3S, food and drinks, a food-drive raffle for The Hunger Coalition, and a jacket collection for the Shoshone Project.
  2. Thursday, November 26. Opening day for Sun Valley's 2026–2027 season starts at 9 a.m.
  3. November 29 through December 20. Under the resort's December Ski Free offer, guests get two free lift tickets per night when they stay at the Sun Valley Lodge or Cottages.
  4. December. Two new chairlifts on Bald Mountain are scheduled to open. Lookout Express is a high-speed six-pack with a 2,673-foot vertical rise, replacing a 1993 lift. Christmas is a high-speed detachable quad with a 1,354-foot rise, replacing a 1988 lift. Sunny's Adventure Park on Dollar Mountain also opens for its second season in December.

Galena Lodge is closed for the fall. Its homepage says it will reopen on "December 4th" but doesn't give a year, so check the lodge directly before planning a trip north around that date.

Until opening day, the open questions are mostly about late evening. Mountain Rides has added daytime trips, the pools run until 9 p.m., and the last southbound Valley bus now leaves at 10:30 p.m. Four Liberty Theater nights between October 22 and November 6 end at 11 p.m.
